MOOI – Sustainable Fashion Festival in Antwerp

Tinglingly exciting, the MOOI FESTIVAL is a Sustainable Fashion Festival here in Antwerp in its second edition. As the Fashion industry enters a crucial juncture of tremendous change, facing a pivotal moment of reinvention, the MOOI Festival opens a dialogue for creativity in sustainable fashion and the greening of the clothing industry.

The MOOI festival ( dutch word for beautiful or nice) produced by Villanella and De Studio and curated by Bruno Pieters started out in 2015 and aims to showcase fresh and wonderful sustainable practices that will wow fashionistas, general consumers, and retailers and enrich them as well.

Ethical in its substance, creative at its core and with a mix of beauty and gravitas, the MOOI festival aims to highlight those in the fashion committed to producing clothing that is ethical, fair, and environmentally responsible. The MOOI festival will present current ideas circulating around fashion in balance with our ecology including slow fashion and the sharing economy and call out interesting people redesigning fashion starting from its fibre. Over two days, the initiative presents a variety of talks and displays of key sustainable thinkers and doers including sustainable fashion designers fair-trade designers, sustainable product developers, and sustainable retailers.

In lieu of new sustainable textiles are sprouting up like mushrooms and profound innovation in green materials, the MOOI’s fabric expo has literally a display of fabrics made from mushrooms, plus futuristic ‘smart’ fabrics and Freitag’s biodegradable denim that propels rethinking fabric choice. Over two days, visitors will discover practical innovative sustainable practices through successful examples of upcycling done by Texup and the clothing library of Les Rebelles d’Anvers, traditional craft by Jan Jan van Essche. Keynote speakers and designers include Walter Van Beirendonck on fresh new perspectives, Bruno Pieters on transparency, Hasmik Matevosyan on a new business model.

The MOOI festival challenges visitors to dare to rethink, to redesign, to remake fashion.
